How to Check if Your PAN Card is Still Active or Not?

Recently Government has deactivated more than 11.4 lakhs PAN cards mostly because of duplication. As per Income Tax Laws, it is not legal to hold more than one PAN (Permanent Account Number) card. However, there were cases found where multiple PAN cards were issued to one person. Moreover, there were cases where a PAN card was allotted to either a non-existent person or in the name of a person with fake identities. 

The government also said that one PAN card allotted to multiple persons and multiple PAN cards allotted to one person. As there have been so many PAN card cancellations, it is very important for everyone to check the status of their PAN cards. It is also advisable to link your Aadhaar number with your PAN card as it is made compulsory by the government for filing income tax return.

How to Check if Your PAN Card is Still Active or Not?

You need to visit the Income Tax e-filing website in order to check whether your PAN card is still active or not. Below is the step to step instructions to check the validity of your PAN card.

Step by step procedure

1. Go to the income tax department’s e-filing website: http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/
2. On the homepage, under the ‘Services’ tab, spot and click ‘Know your PAN’ option on the left-hand side of the webpage.

3. Now you will be directed to a new page.
4. Enter the following details: Surname, Middle Name, First name, Status (Select the status from the drop-down menu), Gender, Date of Birth and Mobile Number. Click on ‘Submit’ button.

5. Again you will be redirected to a new page and you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.

6. Enter the OTP and click on ‘Validate’ button.

7. In case there is more than one PAN with the entered details. A new page will open again and the system will show a message as “there are multiple records for this query. Provide additional information”

8. Enter the required information such as your father’s name.

9. Click on ‘Submit’ button.

10. On the next page, if your PAN number is not duplicated, it will show the status of your PAN card as ‘Active’ under the ‘Remarks’ column.
