How to update your profile on Income Tax Website?

It is important for taxpayers to update their profile and other vital details on income tax e-filing website. Once you login to e-filing portal you will be requested to update your mobile number, email address, and address so that the updated contact details are registered with the income tax department or confirm that the already registered mobile and email Id are your valid personal contacts.



This exercise will ensure that any information sent by the IT department reaches directly on your correct email and mobile. The complete procedure to update is very easy and simple. In this post, let us take a look at How to update your profile on Income Tax Website?



Why you should update your profile on Income Tax Website

It is mandatory that all taxpayers must have valid contact details registered in e-filing portal. This information will be used by the IT department for sending communication like the status of processing, issue of refunds, tax demand notice, password reset request, etc.



How to update your profile on Income Tax Website

Below is the step by step procedure to update your details on e-filing portal.
2. Click on the “Login Here” button.
3. Log in with your User Id and Password.
4. Once you log in, the system will automatically prompt you to update your profile details.
5. Now update your residential status, contact details and address details. There also options to provide a secondary email Id and mobile number. Along with this information you also need to select from the given options that email and mobile belongs to whom. A screenshot of the same is given below.

6. After providing all the required details, click on the “Continue” button.
7. Now you will receive two different OTPs from the IT department, one OTP in your mobile and second OTP in your email Id. (If you do not receive OTP within two minutes, please click on “Resend OTP” button to receive it again. The OTPs once received will be valid for 24 hours.
8. Enter both the OTPs in the respective input fields to authenticate that the mobile & email address are correct. Please note that both OTPs are different.
9. Click on the “Validate” button.

10. Upon successful validation, your contact details and address details will get updated in your profile.
11. A success message will be displayed on the screen as shown in the below image.

12. You will also receive an email from the IT department.

If your profile details are already updated, the system will not prompt you for updating your profile when login. In that case, you need to go to the “Profile Setting” and select “My Profile” option and view your profile details. You can also view your PAN details, address, contact details and Aadhaar details in “My Profile” section.


Notable Points

1. The validation of mobile & email address is a one-time process. However, whenever you change your mobile number or email Id in your profile, the process will be repeated to ensure that the particulars provided are correct.
2. Same mobile number or email Id can be used for a maximum of 10 taxpayer accounts as their primary mobile number or email Id in e-filing. But in general, taxpayers should have their own email and mobile number registered with the income tax department.
3. The primary mobile and email are mandatory and secondary are optional.
4. You can enter any other person’s mobile number or email Id as a secondary contact.
5. Make sure you receive all the communication from the tax department by including the emails and SMS from the income tax department in the ‘safe list’ or ‘white list’.
